Case Example 3: Consumer, Trader, and Distributor of Child Pornography
A 46-year-old Caucasian male, with a prior arrest record for possession of marijuana and methamphetamines signed on to an Internet chat room under a screen name that highlighted his deviant, sexual preference: He preferred very young children in subservient positions. At the time of his arrest in a child pornography investigation, he was on probation and had mandatory drug screenings. The offender was open about his sexual preference and indicated that he endured a psychologically abusive childhood in which his mother exposed him to sex on a regular basis. Additionally, he reported a history of a severe medical condition which caused him to feel “uncomfortable with sex” and consequently had abstained from sexual intercourse since his diagnosis, 20 years prior.
He indicated that sexual frustration, a need for companionship, and curiosity drew him to child pornography. He admitted to collecting child pornography for approximately 10 years and had accumulated thousands of images and videos. The images and videos contained victims, ranging in age from infants to preteens, often including torture, rape, and other forms of degradation. When asked, “What does child pornography mean to you,” he responded,The way that I’ve tried to analyze it or I guess live with it is…it’s not something I would act on or do anything. It’s, it’s up here (points to head), it’s like how some people I guess are into animals or how some people are into whatever fetish that they’re into. For me, what I’ve analyzed is…it’s about the dominance of the male. I’m not interested in women with kids. I’m not interest[ed] with kids…it’s a dominate male with a younger kid… In my fantasy…it’s the man dominating the child.
